The cultivated terraces are found at lower and higher altitudes in the Northern Mountains. They are exemplifiedby their lush environment, falaj irrigation system, and a richdiversity of cultivated trees and crops. They are a stunning example of Oman’s traditional agricultural ingenuity. Cultivated plants of note include, lemon, lime, orange, almond, pomegranate, peach, grapevine, walnut, wheat and barley. The high elevation terraced gardens of Jebel Al Akhdar are particularly famous for apricots, almonds, pomegranates and roses. The date palm groves that occur at lower elevations are characterized by an intricate planting of food crops and naturally occurring shade loving annuals and perennials.
