Rumex vesicarius

Slightly succulent annual with ribbed stems, sometimes reddish in colour, up to 30cm. Leaves: Arrow shaped, often red tinged, on a long stalk with entire margins. Flowers: White, inconspicuous. Fruit: Surrounded by bright red wings with red veins when mature. Flowering period: Most of the year, if near water. Habitat: Common along roadsides, sandy and gravel hillsides. Found in Northern Oman. Altitude: up to 1800m. Uses: Leaves are edible as a salad or eaten raw. Note: Leaves contain oxalic acid giving them a lemony taste.
